President Trump’s White House meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy went poorly on Friday. While the two leaders had been expected to sign a mineral deal and to discuss ending the war with Russia, the meeting did not go as planned.
Trump and Zelenskyy had been expected to sign an economic deal that would have given the U.S. a share of profits from Ukraine’s minerals as repayment for the billions in aid given by the U.S. The deal was part of a broader cease-fire effort to end the three-year-long war.
But when Zelenskyy pressured Trump for a U.S. commitment to provide security for Ukraine, Trump called the Ukrainian leader “disrespectful.” Trump then canceled the planned press conference that was scheduled to follow the meeting, and Zelenskyy left the White House without signing the mineral deal.
“You’re gambling with World War III, and what you’re doing is very disrespectful to the country, this country that’s backed you far more than a lot of people say they should have,” Trump told Zelenskyy.
