Birmingham lawyer and aspiring politician Akhmed Yakoob has been charged with money laundering offences.

Yakoob, whose catchphrase is ‘there’s a defence for every offence’ has been charged alongside city accountant Nabeel Afzal, the National Crime Agency announced this afternoon, Wednesday, May 21.

Yakoob, 37, of Perry Barr, and Azfal 38, of Edgbaston, are accused of money laundering; encouraging money laundering; and contravening a requirement to apply customer due diligence measures when establishing a business relationship.

The alleged offences date from February 18, 2020 and January 8, 2021.

They will due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on June 17.

The NCA said: “A solicitor and an accountant have been charged with money laundering offences following a National Crime Agency investigation.
